Assuming you don't want to deploy it yourself and only want to point a domain you own to slinkset.com, then the answer is yes.
Wherever you manage your DNS create a CNAME alias pointing the domain you want to slinkset.com. Then log in to slinkset and click "Settings" for the site you want. Go to the "Advanced" tab, put the domain in the "Custom Domain" field and save.
The CNAME update does not seem to be working for my domain registered at 1and1.com
I've added my domain.com address in the Advanced settings and then went and changed the CNAME record alias on 1and1 to point to domain.com. When I enter either the site URL on Slinkset or enter the domain.com name directly, I am sent to a parking page which says URL NOT FOUND.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Is there any way I can get my slinkset site to point to a custom domain with the 'www.' in front of it?
Currently if I type the 'www.' in it goes to my domain name provider's site.
This should work now.
It is still not working for me. When I type my domain name into the 'Custom Domain' box in admin and click 'save custom domain' it automatically shortens the domain to take out the www.
Sorry. I should have been clearer. Right now the Custom Domain box does get rid of the www, but it should still work. You just need to point the DNS of www domain to us as well. Wherever you manage you DNS create a CNAME record aliasing www to slinkset.com.
My host pointed out to me that pointing the root domain to a CNAME record would set up problems with the MX records for mail (i.e. if I wanted to have mail at that account).
Quote:
That's because a CNAME on the main domain will be interpreted by DNS servers as "make the entire domain an alias of 'slinkset.com' and ignore any further DNS records". This means that any MX records set on your domain (which determine mail handling) will be ignored, and the MX record set for 'slinkset.com' will be followed instead.
Because of this, I would prefer to just use www as the subdomain, and then force the redirect from the root to www through my host. But unfortunately, I have the same problem as the commenter above, where the subdomain is truncated when using www.
I'm a big fan of "no www" but in this case I think using www would be the preferred behavior, unless you think what I'm describing here is incorrect. Can you let me konw?
I'm not really an expert on DNS. I do know that I have a domain (arglebargle.org) where the main domain is CNAMEd to slinkset.com but the MX records point to google apps. Both the site and the email work fine.
I would not be surprised if different DNS software allowed for different things though.
If it makes a difference and you really need to you could create and A record to our IP address (208.43.164.194). It should be stable for a while, but if you go that route make sure we have your email address.
Also now you should be able to put "www" in the custom domain field. Though either way the "www" and non-"www" version should worked if the DNS is mapped correctly.
Brett, I appreciate your reply above and for fixing that constraint on the entry form.
It looks, however, as though a bug might have been introduced during that fix. When I try to make changes to one of my other settings, I get a validation error on the custom domain field saying "that name is already taken." When I temporarily take down my custom domain, I can save changes just fine. I can then add back my custom domain and it will take. However, if I again make changes to any other field, those changes won't take and the validation error on the custom domain field will show again.
Hopefully a minor fix for this but I thought you should know. Thanks.
Thanks for the report. I'll get that fixed right now.
Should be fixed now. Sorry about that.
Thanks for fixing this, Brett. I found another bug that might be related to
this one. The logout link at the top right is missing the www subdomain.
Instead of:
http://slinkset.com/sessions?n=http://www.site.com/logout
It's showing:
http://slinkset.com/sessions?n=http://.site.com/logout
(Note the extra period in addition to the missing subdomain.
This is happening on a site in which I am using www as the subdomain.
I appreciate your help! (Brett, let me know if there is a better place to submit bugs.)
Sorry about that. This should be fixed now.
Here is fine for bug reports. If it's easier you can email contact@slinkset.com or brett at the same domain. I'm just ecstatic you're reporting them at all. Thank you very much.
I want "news.thinkgene.com" to point to "thinkgene.slinkset.com"
Is this the only record that I need in my DNS file?
news \t thinkgene.slinkset.com \t CNAME
Two things. First, you don't need the subdomain in the target of the cname. (ie. it should point to slinkset.com instead of thinkgene.slinkset.com, though both would probably work.)
Second, currently your dns server thinks you've given it thinkgene.slinkset.com as a subdomain of thinkgene.com. So the dns comes back:
;; ANSWER SECTION:
news.thinkgene.com. 68228 IN CNAME thinkgene.slinkset.com.thinkgene.com.
To fix this you need to add a trailing "." to the target of the CNAME. It looks like you're using slicehost for DNS, so I pretty sure you need to edit the record as follows:
Type: CNAME
Name: news
Value: slinkset.com.
Hopefully that works.
Yes, that works. I hope this helps with that FAQ / help section you must be writing for the website! ;)
Awesome. And yes, this does help with the help section we need to get to.
My domain host is GoDaddy. Can please post instructions on how to point the domain, sportingdirt.net to slinkset?
Thanks in advance.
custom domain does not seem to work for http://ranker.buylinuxdvd.com
http://buylinuxdvd.slinkset.com/ seems to be redirecting to http://ranker.buylinuxdvd.com but error page is Address Not Found
Does it take time to setup/resolve?
btw, great to have slinkset, been looking for something like this for a while. thanks
It looks like it is working for me. DNS does get cached, so it can take a while for your DNS update to propagate through everywhere.
how do you stop me from setting up a proxy on my server, forward all traffic to you while stealing users' cookies? (we had this concern with custom domains on http://soup.io)
In our new version user information should only ever be sent posted to slinkset.com.
Someone could still steal cookies as you mention, but it shouldn't do them much good. They would only be able to post to their own site as the user who's cookie they stole.
Ok, I just noticed that if i type in www.sportingdirt.net, i get the SportingDirt page hosted on Slinkset.
However, when I punch in just sportingdirt.net (without the www) i get a link page hosted by GoDaddy. What gives...I sure i'm totally missing something here...your help is much appreciated.
Try this:
- Under your domain pick "Total DNS Control and MX Records".
- Remove all of the "A (Host)" records
- Click "Add New CNAME Record"
In the top field put your domain name (without "www") and in the bottom put "slinkset.com".
- Wait a while (hours possibly) for your dns cache to update.
This worked, Thanks!
could you please provide instructions for those using everydns.net? ...if I want to link URL.slinkset.com to SUBURL.url.com
thanks!
fixthisbarack.com and fixthisbarack.slinkset.com are both pointing to an empty directory on my bluehost account right now; it should be going the other way around.
hi guys, hope you dont mind me bothering you too. bit of a newb to managing a domain, apologies if i make no sense....so following the advice here i have in my CNAME records www.mysite.com pointed to slinkset.com and it that works
but i would also like mysite.com to point to my slinkset site, currently it points to one of my registrar - joker.com's pages. whose IP is listed in my a-record.
if i erase that a-record will mysite.com point to my slinkset site or do i need to add a new url as my a-record or what do i do?
I have been asking on forums for a book to learn all the aspects of domain management and i either get no response or flamed out of it and told to look for reliable online guides from legitimate sources and not books but i cant find any of them either so if anyone has a link to one i would appreciate it...peace!
for payment in kind i have submitted this quick tip :)
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the interface at Joker.com.
I do know that CNAME root level domains can be a tricky thing. Some DNS providers allow it, some don't, and some make you CNAME everything if you do it (including the MX or mail records).
So you have 3 options:
- Figure out if you can CNAME the root domain as well. Sounds like you're commenting because you can't.
- Create an A record for the root domain to 208.43.164.194 -- This isn't perfect because we can't be sure our IP will always remain the same. It does seem pretty stable for a while though. If you go this route just make sure we have your email.
- Use your hosting provider's or some other web server to force the root domain to redirect to the www version.
Let me know if that helps.
thanks very much brett. i went with option 2. as you imagined, it wont allow me to cname the root domain, so i had to go this route. dont know what your option 3 means so hopefully i can find a good guide that will teach me about all these things soon. i have also own 3 other domains that i am going to url forward to my slinkset site that contain relevant search terms to the nature of my slink-set site. do you think there are any issues with doing this? and will i use the contact form to send you my email address? thanks again!
I'm not entirely sure what you mean with the other domains. Your slinkset site can only be severed on one domain for right now. The other domains could redirect there, I'm not sure how that would impact search terms. My understanding is that inbound links are what effects search the most.
As for the email address, just make sure the one on your account is correct (click on "My Account" in the upper right).
thanks again brett. i guess i was reading this article about forwarding domains and wondering of there is a way to implement its suggestions with your service.
"...Given enough time, you may find your site has been banned from the search engine index.
What's the solution?
Your domain names need to be routed from the domain name registrar to a hosting account - from the hosting account (and this varies - consult your technical support provider for the account) you'll need to set a Permanent Redirect to your main site.
A Permanent Redirect is logged as a code '301' (thence, it is often referred to as a '301 Permanent Redirect') - if you have multiple domain names which you wish to direct to a single site, it may be especially useful for you to consider a website hosting account which offers multiple add-on domains and subdomains to accommodate all the domain names you'll need to forward."
